If you visit Tyler Hill woods

You will see a notice at the entrance to Honey Wood that the woodland management work being undertaken has been approved and has been delayed by Covid. The work involves clearing trees that have fallen, been partially uprooted by storms, are weak because of the dense canopy or are preventing other trees from developing because of the density of growth in the area.
A few decades ago this sort of maintenance of our woodland would have been continuous as areas of chestnut stools were coppiced every 14 years to provide hop poles for the hop-growing fields and pit props for coal mines. We even had a charcoal burner (Jimmy James by name) who operated along Thornden Wood Road.
The Parish Council is monitoring the work being undertaken and will be seeking the information as to what is going to be done with the cut timber.
